Country Fried Steak w/Country Gravy

This crispy vegan take on the classic country fried steak is delicious and pairs perfectly with Brown Sugar Dijon Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Dinner Rolls.




Ingredients

For the steaks
  • 1 lbs. beyond meat/4 burger patties
  • 1 vegan egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cup AP flour
  • 1 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp. hot sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. chicken/poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. msg/mushroom powder
  • 1 tsp. creole seasoning
For the Gravy
  • 2 tbsp. vegan butter/fried drippings
  • 2 tbsp. AP flour
  • 1-2 cups almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • seasoning/chicken salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Split the Beyond meat into about 4 large patties, or 8 small patties
  2. Roll into a ball and gently smash into a semi-organic circular shape and put on a tray
  3. Place the tray into the freezer for 30 minutes. 
  4. While the patties are freezing, take out three similar sized bowls
  5. In the first bowl, combine the flour and all the seasonings
  6. In the next bowl, combine the vegan egg, and almond milk
  7. In the last bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs
  8. Remove the patties from the freezer and preheat a skillet with about 1 inch - 2 inches of oil in it on medium high heat. 
  9. Dip the patties into the flour bowl followed by the egg bowl, and finally the breadcrumb bowl. 
  10. Once the patty is coated and the oil is heated, gently drop the patty into the hot oil and fry until crispy on both sides. Be sure the patty cooks in the center and the oil is not too hot. 
  11. After frying, set the crispy patty on to a paper towel lined plate or cooling rack to drain the excess oil. 
  12. Once the patties are fried, drain the oil from the pan, but save about 2 tbsp. 
  13. In the heated oil, add the flour and whisk to create a thick paste consistency. 
  14. Stream in the plant milk slowly and whisk constantly until your desired thickness of gravy is achieved. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and seasoned salt. 
  15. Serve the gravy hot over the country fried steak and with your favorite country style sides.
